The water frame and Cromford mill birthed the factory system.

Richard Arkwright’s water frame (1769) spun stronger yarn at scale. In 1771 he built a water-powered cotton mill at Cromford.

By 1788, 143 Arkwright-type mills operated across England — the factory system had arrived.
